Rafael Nadal's absence from the 2025 French Open changes the tournamentNew Foto - Rafael Nadal's absence from the 2025 French Open changes the tournament

PARIS (AP) — Asthe French Openenters a new, post-Rafa, era this year, there are a couple of prevailing sentiments among tennis players. One is: It's a shame the world won't get to see the King of Clay, asRafael Nadalcame to be called, ply his unique brand oftopspin-heavy relentlessnesson the crushed red brick of Roland-Garros, where he won a record 14 of his22 Grand Slam titles. The other, expressed by men who would love to get a chance at carving their own bit of history at the place, goes like this: Whew, it sure will be nice not to have that guy looming in the bracket now thatthe 38-year-old Spaniard is retired. Players no longer need to worry about Nadal at the French Open "Luckily — or unluckily — I never got toplay him in Roland-Garros," said American Tommy Paul, a 2023 Australian Open semifinalist currently ranked 12th. "It's nice to not have to worry about him, I guess," Paul added with a laugh. "That's the main thing that comes to my mind." Players repeatedly used the word "different" to describe what it'll be like without Nadal around. "It'll be strange for the fans, above all," said top-10 player Lorenzo Musetti, an Italian who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and earned an Olympic bronze medal in 2024. "But the history he made in Paris will never be forgotten." Nadal's 14 French Open titles are a record for any Grand Slam tournament To be sure,Nadal's dominance in Paris was unprecedented. "Impossible," defending champion Carlos Alcaraz said, "to repeat." Nadal collected more championships than any other player at one major tennis tournament, spanning from his first, which arrived two days after his 19th birthday in his 2005 debut, to hislast at age 36 in 2022 on a painful footthat required nerve-dulling injections. He went112-4 overall in the event. One measure of just how good Nadal was there is reflected in his head-to-head records against the other two members of the Big Three of men's tennis, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Nadal went 8-2 against Djokovic in the French Open — accounting for about 15% of all of Djokovic's lifetime Grand Slam losses anywhere — and6-0 against Federer. "What a legend. What an ambassador for the sport," Australian player Thanasi Kokkinakis said about Nadal. "One of the greatest athletes ever — not just in tennis." Nadal will be honored by a ceremony at the French Open on Sunday He certainly left his indelible mark in Paris. A larger-than-life statue was erected near an entrance to the tournament grounds in 2021, while he was still active;a ceremony honoring himwill be held Sunday in the main stadium, Court Philippe-Chatrier, after the first three matches of Day 1. One would imagine that Nadal will be treated to the sort of applause and chants of "Ra-fa!" he heard often, including when he played for the final time at the site —at the Paris Olympics last year— and left describing the "unforgettable feeling and emotions" he enjoyed. And no one who ever faced him, or watched him, at the French Open will forget his lefty whip of a forehand or the way he stood so far back to return serve or the way he chased every ball. Or the way the arena announcer would list off all of his ever-growing list of championship years before a match. Or the way Nadal would bite his trophies after winning one, something Naomi Osaka emulated after claiming her first clay-court title just last month. "As a tennis community, everybody's going to miss Rafa, for sure. If I were thinking about it selfishly, I would say, 'Of course I want to watch Rafa play. Of course I want him to be here,'" former No. 1 and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka said. "But I see it a little bit differently. I look at it as that was his decision. Same with when Serena (Williams) left. Of course I miss Serena; she was my biggest motivator. But they've moved on in their life to what's best for them. And I just have so much respect for what they've done for the sport. How much they contributed. How much they elevated it. My only thing is to say, 'Thank you,' to players like that." ___ Howard Fendrich has been the AP's tennis writer since 2002. Find his stories here:https://apnews.com/author/howard-fendrich. Verdict expected in Kim Kardashian jewelry heist trial in ParisNew Foto - Verdict expected in Kim Kardashian jewelry heist trial in Paris

Paris— After a month-long trial, theten people accused of robbingbillionaire celebrityKim Kardashianwere given the last word in the final session of their trial on Friday before the jury retired to consider its verdict. The man accused of being the brains behind the $10 million jewelry heist in 2016 offered "a thousand apologies" in a scribbled note to the court. Aomar Aït Khedache, 69, is now deaf and largely mute. Prosecutors have called for him to be sentenced to 10 years in prison. Nine men and one woman have been on trial for their involvement in the brazen armed robbery, facing charges including robbery and kidnapping. The gang was dubbed "the Grandpa Robbers" by French media because most were in their 60s at the time of the heist. Kardashian was in Paris for Fashion Week in October 2016, staying in a discreet hotel in the center of the city. In emotional four-and-a-half-hour testimony 10 days ago, she told the Paris court she "absolutely" believed she was going to be "raped and killed" when one of the armed, masked robbers grabbed her leg and pulled her toward him as she lay on her bed wearing just a bathrobe. She was bound with zip ties and duct tape and locked in the bathroom while the robbers searched her room for the expensive jewelry they said they had seen on social media posts by the woman they recognized only as "the rapper's wife" — a reference to her then-husband Kanye West. During the final session on Friday, the two accused whose DNA was recovered from the scene of the crime, both of whom have admitted to their parts in the robbery, apologized to Kardashian and the court. Yunis Abbas, 71, who had already apologized directly to Kardashian for contributing to the trauma she said she lives with daily, told the court: "All I have to say is to apologize to you again; I'm sorry for what I may have done." He was suspected of being the lookout for the gang, stationed outside the luxury residence known as the No Name hotel. Khedache, in his scribbled note, also apologized to his son. Harminy Aït Khedache, 38, was accused being a driver for the gang that night. He faces eight years in prison if convicted. Investigators only found DNA from two of the accused, and in court on Friday, the other eight took to the witness stand to reiterate their claims that they had nothing to do with the crime. The prosecution has called for 10-year sentences against the four men charged with directly participating in the armed robbery — Khedache, Abbas, Didier Dubreucq, 70, and the youngest of the accused, Marc-Alexandre Boyer, 35. The prosecutor said in court that they were "experienced robbers who came up with a plan and succeeded." Florus Heroui, 52, a Parisian bar manager, and Gary Madar, 36, a waiter and brother of Kardashian's regular Paris chauffeur, who allegedly fed tips to the gang, both face possible seven-year sentences if convicted. The only woman on trial, Christiane Glotin, 79, a former companion of the senior Khedache, was accused of being the gang's "secretary," taking care of logistics. The prosecution has called for to receive a six-year sentence. The prosecution called for François Delaporte, who is charged with being an accomplice, to be sentenced to four years in prison, with two of them suspended, and for Marc Boyer, who's charged with illegal possession of a weapon, to be fined about $23,000. He is the father of Marc-Alexandre Boyer. 'Lilo & Stitch': The biggest changes from Disney's original movieNew Foto - 'Lilo & Stitch': The biggest changes from Disney's original movie

Spoiler alert! We're discussing major plot details from Disney's live-action "Lilo & Stitch." Beware if you haven't seen it yet. On paper, a fragile-voiced mollusk and a calamitous blue alien have very little in common. But the parallels are obvious to director Dean Fleischer Camp, who is following up his 2022 Oscar-nominated "Marcel the Shell With Shoes On" with Disney's live-action remake of "Lilo & Stitch" (in theaters now). "They're both unique protagonists who are looking for their place – and their people – in this world that wasn't really made for them," Camp says. "Even though they're adorable and funny, they have this quiet well of sadness that is very emotional." Join our Watch Party!Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox "Lilo" charts the unlikely bond between a lonely, 6-year-old Hawaiian girl (Maia Kealoha) and her pet extraterrestrial Stitch, whom she adopts from a dog shelter after he crash-lands on Earth. The new movie has allthe Elvis songs and droll one-linersthat you love, but with a bevy of notable changes that die-hard Disney fans will catch as well. Here are some of the major differences in the big-screen update: When we meet the unruly Lilo, she is being raised by her 19-year-old sister, Nani (Sydney Agudong), after their parents died. The new movie fleshes out Nani considerably: Once a star student and athlete, she has now shelved her college dreams of studying marine biology so that she can work and raise Lilo. "In a live-action film, you do have a responsibility to deepen the stakes," Camp says. "I feel a lot of things for Nani. The original doesn't go that deeply into it, but this poor girl was essentially forced to be a teen mom at this time in her life when all of her friends would be graduating high school and dating and thinking about their futures. She had to put all of that on hold, so it felt like a really rich character to invest in." Stitch, otherwise known as Experiment 626, is pursued by fellow aliens Jumba (Zach Galifianakis) and Pleakley (Billy Magnussen), who have been sent to retrieve him after he escapes from another galaxy. In the animated film, Jumba and Pleakley don a variety of disguises – glasses, sunhats, dresses ‒ as they covertly traipse about Hawaii. But in the live-action movie, the characters simply assume human form when they arrive on Earth. As fun as it might be to watch computer-generated aliens in drag, Camp worried that audiences wouldn't buy it. "We wrote these roles for Zach and Billy, and you do want to see them," Camp says. Also, the goal of this adaptation was "to tell a more emotional story of these human sisters, and if we go too clownish with this or that, does it undermine the stakes?" The animated film opens with Lilo delivering a peanut butter sandwich to a fish named Pudge, who lives in the ocean. ("Pudge controls the weather," she explains in an oft-quoted scene.) But as eagle-eyed viewers might notice, the sandwich only has lettuce and tomato in the live-action movie. "Peanut butter didn't read very well underwater," Camp says, laughing. "The process of adapting one of these films thoughtfully is taking every piece that you like from the original and saying, 'Does that work in live action? And if not, what is something that has the same essence?'" Both movies feature intermittent cutaways to an unnamed man who drops his dessert whenever he encounters Lilo and other alien shenanigans. Although that's mint chocolate-chip ice cream in the original "Lilo," the treat has been changed to a multihued Hawaiian shave ice in the 2025 film. "Part of the opportunity of adapting into live action is to make a more authentic depiction of Hawaii," Camp says. "We worked with a lot of consultants. The shave ice was actually the idea of our writer, Chris Bright, who's Hawaiian. He was just like, 'Shave ice? Everywhere on the island. Ice cream? Not so much.'" Bright also pulled from his lived experience growing up in Hawaii for the movie's new characters. The live-action film introduces Tūtū (Amy Hill), Lilo and Nani's elderly neighbor who becomes a surrogate mother of sorts after their parents' deaths. "Chris was just like, 'If this really did happen, where these girls were orphaned, they're in Hawaii. They wouldn't just be abandoned by all their friends and neighbors,'" Camp recalls. "There would be a real effort to try and support them after this tragedy, so it was his idea to introduce that character." In the animated movie, Cobra Bubbles was a former CIA agent-turned-social worker. But here, he's effectively been split up into two distinct characters: a federal agent named Cobra (Courtney B. Vance), and a social worker named Mrs. Kekoa (Tia Carrere), who warns Nani that Lilo will be taken from her if she can't hold down a job. "In order to buy these two girls getting separated in a live-action movie, you couldn't really have the representative of that antagonistic force be a comically huge guy with tattoos on his knuckles, who for some reason is also a social worker," Camp says. Carrere voiced Nani in the animated movie, which gives her scenes with Agudong a "metatextual" layer, Camp adds. "This grown-up Nani, with all her wisdom, is now advising a younger version of herself. It's beautiful." Where Is the "Full House" Cast Now? See What the Stars Are Doing Today, 30 Years After the Iconic Show Ended

Bob D'Amico /Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty ; Andrea Barber/ Instagram It's been 30 years since viewers said goodbye to the extended Tanner family. Full Houseoriginally premiered on Sept. 22, 1987, and after eight seasons, the beloved sitcom aired its series finale on May 23, 1995. The show starredBob Saget,John Stamos,Lori Loughlin,Dave Coulier,Candace Cameron Bure,Andrea Barber,Jodie SweetinandMary-KateandAshley Olsen. Bure, Sweetin and Barber, and other cast members of the original series, reprised their roles for the 2016 revival,Fuller House. The Netflix original ran for five seasons, concluding in June 2020. "We never stoppedloving each other," Stamos told PEOPLE on the set ofFuller Housein May 2021. "That magic you saw? It's still there because it never stopped from the day that we ended the show." To celebrate the 30th anniversary of theFull Houseseries finale, find out what the cast has been up to since the show ended. Sweetin has worked in a number of independent films sinceFull House, includingPort City(2009) andRedefining Love(2009). Around the same time, she opened up about her addiction to drugs and alcohol in her 2010 memoir,unSweetined. In 2016, the actress hit the ballroom on season 22 ofDancing with the Stars. Several years later, Sweetin announced that her partner,Mescal Wasilewski, proposed in January 2022. The pair thenwed in an intimate ceremonyat a private home in Malibu on July 30, 2022. (She was previously married three times before, including to the father of her children.) In July 2023, Sweetin and former costar, Barber, launched theirFull Houserewatch podcast,How Rude, Tanneritos! Just one year afterFull Houseended, Bure married hockey proValeri Bure. She appeared in a few TV movies as well as an episode ofBoy Meets World, and then took a few years off from acting to focus on her family, which includedher three children. Since going back to work, her most memorable pop culture moments have been in the showMake It or Break It, her gig as a co-host onThe Viewand her third-place finish onDancing with the Stars. Bure madeFull Housefans the happiest in 2016 when she, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber rebooted their series with the Netflix showFuller House, following their characters into adulthood (and featuring cameos from most of the OGs). The actress has stayed busy in made-for-TV holiday movies, too, and serves aschief creative officer for the Great American Family network. In 2022, shereceived backlash on comments she madeabout the network's depiction of "traditional marriage," and responded by saying "it breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone." For these two,Full Housewas just the beginning. The twin sisters went on to release a number of successfulstraight-to-video movies(Passport to Paris, anyone?), star in two more TV shows and launch their own company, Dualstar, which they took over as joint CEOs in 2004. Gradually, they both exited the acting world — Ashley hasn't had a real role in more than two decades, while Mary-Kate held on a little longer with stints in shows likeWeeds, and 2011'sBeastly. Now, they head up the designer fashion label,The Row, which had its latestrunway showat Paris Fashion Week in March 2025. In 2015,Mary-Kate quietly marriedFrench banker Olivier Sarkozy. A handful of years later, shefiled for divorcein 2020, and has since focusedon her equestrian work. Ashley has kept a similarly low profile, walking the red carpet soloat the 2021 CFDA Awards. In December 2022,she wedLouis Eisner in an intimate ceremony. The following year, in summer 2023, the couple welcomed their son,Otto. The Tanner family patriarch kept busy after theFull Housefinale, appearing on shows likeRaising Dad,EntourageandGrandfathered. AsHow I Met Your Motherfans know, the actor voiced the "older" Ted Mosby throughout the show's nine-season run. He also penned several books, including 2014'sDirty Daddy: The Chronicles of a Family Man Turned Filthy Comedian, and consistently did stand-up, withhis last special premiering on Netflixin 2022. Saget welcomedthree daughterswith his ex-wife Sherri Kramer. He later married Kelly Rizzoin 2018. Sadly, theactor was found deadin an Orlando hotel room on Jan. 9, 2022, after doing a stand-up show outside of Jacksonville, Florida. He was 65. Stamos hasn't stopped sinceFull House, nabbing a number of films and TV shows, most notably inER, on which he starred for four years. He also had featured spots inGlee,Scream Queens,GrandfatheredandYou, in addition to appearing onBig Shotfrom 2021 to 2022. The actor later authored his first memoir,If You Would Have Told Me, which was released in October 2023. In 2018,he married longtime loveCaitlin McHugh; together, they haveone son named Billy. Stamos appeared on ABC'sDoctor Odysseyin November 2024, and he will be reuniting with The Beach Boys, joining them for select dates on their summer 2025 tour. Throughout the past two decades, Coulier has stayed active in the industry, appearing in a number of TV shows and films. Known for his voices and impressions (Mr. Woodchuck!), he's done lots of voice work, too. But he's definitely remained loyal to his first love, comedy and continues to tour as a stand-up comedian. In 2014,he wed Melissa Bring, with hisFull Housecostars at his side. Most recently, Coulier wasdiagnosedwith stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in October 2024. Five months later, in March 2025, it was confirmed that Coulier wascancer-free. AfterFull Housewrapped, Barber bowed out of the acting world. She graduated from Whittier College, earned a master's in women's studies from the University of York in England and then went back to work for her undergraduate alma mater. In 2002, she married Jeremy Rytky, with whom she has two children; they divorced in 2014. Fuller Housewas her first role (with the exception of an appearance onIt's F-----' Late with Dave Coulier) since the original series' end. SinceFull House, Loughlin's career on TV has continued. She's starred in shows likeIn Case of Emergency,90210,What Calls the HeartandSummerland, which she co-created and produced. She married her designer husbandMossimo Giannulliin 1997; the couple havetwo adult children, Isabella ("Bella") andOlivia. The family was embroiled inthe 2019 "Varsity Blues" college admissions bribery scandal, when it was discovered that they paid more than $500,000 to have their daughters admitted to the University of Southern California as members of the rowing team. Loughlin servedtwo months in prisonfor her actions in late 2020, while Giannulli was sentenced to five months for his part in the scandal. Shestepped back into the acting worldin late 2021 and starredin a January 2023 TV filmfor the Great American Family network. Loughlin played Lieutenant Bishop, a police officer on the Prime Video showOn Call, which premiered in January 2025. Neither of the twins have acted since theirFull Housedays, and most likely, lived out the rest of their childhood and adolescence in relative normalcy. However, they couldn't keep away from the industry entirely: Dylan worked in the sound departments onGame of ThronesandBlack Sails, while Blake did the same onFBIandCastle Rock.In 2016, they made a brief appearance onFuller House, too.
