Elizabeth Banks Shares Bold Reaction as Elle Fanning Takes Over 'Hunger Games' Role

Elizabeth Banksis handing over the torch of her iconic role for the upcoming prequel,The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The latest in theSuzanne Collins-authored series is set 24 years before Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteered as tribute for District 12 to save her little sister. Fanning is the latest to join the already star-studded cast, includingRalph Fiennes, who will play the younger version of President Coriolanus Snow, who the late Donald Sutherland previously played. Jesse Plemmonsis playing the younger version of Plutarch Heavensbee, previously played byPhilip Seymour HoffmanandMckenna Graceas Maysilee Donner. When it comes to the younger version of her iconic character Effie Trinket, Banks is fully on board with the casting choice and raved about Fanning taking her spot. "I'm super excited," Banks toldPEOPLE, "I texted the producers as well, and I think she's perfect." Banks praised theSuper 8star on Wednesday in New York City as she promoted her new film,The Better Sister. "I think everyone's really happy. And I'm really happy about that," she continued. "I'm excited for the next generation to have their Effie." Banks also admitted that she hasn't read the book this prequel is based on, admitting that she feels "terrible" about it, but hasn't had the time. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reapingis in production now with a theater release slated for 2026.
