"The Summer I Turned Pretty"'s Christopher Briney Felt 'Terrible' on His First Day Filming Final Season: 'I Was Super Intimidated'

Courtesy of Erika Doss/Prime Video Christopher Briney had some major doubts on his first day back on set for season 3 after more than a year away fromThe Summer I Turned Pretty. The actor, 27, who plays Conrad Fisher in the Prime Video series, revealed that he felt "super intimidated" returning to set, and that he "usually feels terrible" about his performances. The highly-anticipated third and final season of the series premieres July 16. Christopher Brineyreally does have a lot in common with hisThe Summer I Turned Prettycharacter. The 27-year-old actor plays Conrad Fisher in the book-turned-series trilogy. He's the first to catch Belly's (Lola Tung) eye, but his younger brother Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) soon gets in the way, which ends up happening a few times. Season 2of the hit Prime Video series premiered in June 2023, seven months after the cast had wrapped filming it. When they began tofilm the third and final season in May of 2024, it had been a year and a half since Briney, Tung, 22, and Casalegno, 25, were last inSummermode — and Briney felt "super intimidated." "We were down for a while, so it was definitely weird to come back," he toldEntertainment Weekly. "It was really weird." It didn't help that the first scene he filmed for season 3, whichpremieres July 16, was a solo Conrad scene either. Erika Doss/Prime Video "I mean, it just usually feels terrible, but I have to trust that [creator]Jenny [Han] and our directors will know when we have what we need," he said. "It's a little trial by fire where I'm like, 'I don't think I'm good at this anymore. I don't know if I ever was.' But then we move on to the next scene, so it can't have been that bad?" Briney admitted that he's "never going to really feel good about my work" and there's a "cap to how good I can feel" about a given take — so it's a good thing that he has Han, the author of the books and the showrunner, as the leader on set. He says, "Jenny wouldn't move on if she wasn't happy." Erika Doss/Prime Video Season 3 picks up at the end of Belly's junior year of college and finds her happy and in love with Jeremiah, who she chose over Conrad inthe dramatic season 2 finale. Everything gets turned around, though, when "some core-shaking events" bring Conrad back into the picture. "Now on the brink of adulthood, Belly finds herself at a crossroads and must decide which brother has her heart," the logline reads. Even thoughthe series is based on Han's bestselling book trilogy, Belly's fate in the show is up in the air, as Han has continued to emphasize. "A successful love triangle is one where, no matter what happens, people are going to be devastated and heartbroken," she toldEW. "Because if the answer feels really clear and easy, then there's no real conflict. No matter what you do, someone's going to be hurt by it." Courtesy of Erika Doss/Prime Video She said that her goal is always for every audience member to have "a true show-watching experience where they find themselves with bated breath being like, 'What's going to happen next?'" instead of knowing exactly what to expect because they read the books. "I wish I could make everyone happy. But I have to please myself first, as a storyteller, to feel proud of the thing that I'm making."Never miss a story — sign up forPEOPLE's free daily newsletterto stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
